Historic pub in Stafford

"The Picture House - JD Wetherspoon" in Stafford, England, is a remarkable pub housed in a former cinema, offering a unique blend of historic charm and modern pub culture. The building, which opened as a cinema in 1914, is a listed building and was lovingly converted into a pub by the well-known Wetherspoon chain in 1997. Located in Stafford, a town with a rich history and a vibrant community, it is a popular gathering place for locals and visitors alike who appreciate a relaxed atmosphere and good food. The proximity to the River Sow and the historical significance of the building make it a special spot in the region.

Wetherspoon pub with history

The interior of The Picture House is a true highlight. The former cinema has preserved many of its original features, including the foyer with its mosaic floor and the original box office, which now serves as a decorative element. The large dining area extends over several levels and leads down to a long bar that runs across the back wall. The vaulted ceiling of the auditorium, adorned with decorative plasterwork, evokes the cinema's heyday, while film posters from the golden age decorate the walls, creating a nostalgic ambiance. A small outdoor area overlooking the river provides additional space and is particularly popular for relaxing in good weather. The atmosphere is lively but not overly noisy, attracting a mixed clientele – from families to students and older guests.

Best fish and chips in Stafford

Culinarily, The Picture House adheres to the Wetherspoon concept, offering a wide range of classic pub dishes with a focus on British cuisine. Particularly popular is the Fish and Chips, a traditional dish featuring crispy battered cod and thick, golden fries, often praised for its generous portions and fresh taste. The Mixed Grill, a hearty combination of various meats like steak and sausage, is also a favorite, reflecting the robust character of the menu. For vegetarians, there is the Quorn Nugget Wrap, served with a spicy sauce, providing a tasty alternative. A special highlight is the Sticky Toffee Pudding, a warm, sweet dessert with a rich toffee sauce, which many guests consider the perfect ending to their visit.

Pub with cinematic flair

The drinks menu is extensive and typical of Wetherspoon pubs. It includes a selection of real ales that change regularly and often represent local breweries, as well as premium lagers and craft beers. The freshly ground Lavazza coffee is especially appreciated, offered all day with free refills – a bonus that is particularly popular among breakfast guests. The cocktail selection adds some variety for those looking for something lighter or more festive.

Lively atmosphere at Wetherspoon

Service at The Picture House is described as friendly and efficient, with the staff making an effort to stay organized even on busy days. The ordering concept is typical for Wetherspoon: guests order at the bar or through the convenient app, which speeds up the process and offers flexibility. On weekends or during special events like sports matches, it can get busy, but the atmosphere remains pleasant and inviting.

I love weatherspoons. I have been to so many up and down the country. The picture house staff was the worst I have seen. Is it to much to ask for a bar person to smile. When you go to a pub you want happy atmosphere not miserable staff. I asked to speak to the manager. Which she did speak to me. My reply was. I CAN ASK THEM TO SMILE. Not the reply I expected from a manager. When I did speak to the manager I asked for her name and was told when I complain they will know who was manager at the time and told I would not be served anymore. What because I complained. People go to a pub/bar for a pleasant experience. Not to be severd by people that don't want to do the job. If they don't want to do the job. THEN DONT TAKE THE JOB.

Really worth visiting. People used to cinema for the films with a short pre film, have an intermission with the icecream sellar in the isles. For the site for it becoming a pub, it is spectacular. Very friendly atmosphere. Food was top. Must return in summer. Easy to park car in town.

Just really bad customer service, told items were missing advised they can only swap for hashbrowns despite what the advisory says at the bar, when asked if they could even check responded with computer says no, all with a sassy attitude. How unfortunate..

Nice bar housed in an old cinema. Service was great and quick. A nice area outside to sit. Only about 10 minutes away from town and an excellent place to visit and relax.

I always get the same meal everytime I visit here as the menu has so many food items it can be overwhelming, the service can be a really good experience but majority of the time I'll be waiting to be served and the staff are either nowhere to be seen or to busy chatting with one another they haven't noticed I'm there. The atmosphere is OK as there is no music only loud chatter from other customers
